the nfl referees are heading to the sideline. the league and officials union agreed on a tentative eight year contract that will put the normal officiating crews back on field. goodell said we look forward to having the finest officials in sports back on field. now it's time to put the focus back on the teams and players where it belongs. >> green bay will have a hard time. >> the two sides got serious about the negotiations after monday night's game between the packers and seahawks, a blown call on the last play of the game cost green bay the victory. >> i've never seen anything like it. >> under the new deal the average pay for the league's refs will rise from $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 next year and $205,000 by 2019. the agreement includes changes to the officials benefits package. some nfl players are glad to see the real refs return. >> we need those guys. they have experience. they have an eye for the game. they understand the players, the coaches, the dynamics of the game. >> after a three month lockout and no game action since last

winter will the officials be ready? >> we're aware of the news rules. we've been working on tests and keeping ourselves in shape and we're ready to go at a moment's notice. we could from our perspective do it. it would be up to the league. >> while the regular refs will be on the field for tonight's game the deal is not done yet. the agreement has to be ratified by 51% of the officials. they will vote friday and saturday and could be back network for sun's slate of games. president obama and mitt romney campaign in virginia today, their first debate next week. yesterday the candidates were in ohio going head-to-head on such issues like taxes and foreign trade. in an effort to attract working class voters. for romney it's a mission in ohio to make up ground on the president with time running out. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ohio is considered a must-win for both candidates. they've been spending so much time that governor kasich joked

they should start paying taxes in the state. it illustrates how important this handful of swing states are. president obama and mitt romney are following each other from one battleground state to another. on wednesday ohio was their target. >> you probably are aware that there's an election going on right now in ohio. >> i believe you're going to help me win ohio. >> reporter: today it's a quick flight to virginia. >> we're a compassionate people. >> reporter: on wednesday romney tried to convey a more empathetic candidate. >> we have people that are hurting, we have people that are disabled and poor and they need our help and receive our help. we're a charitable people. >> reporter: recent polls shows romney trailing the president on the question of which candidate cares about my needs. but time is running out for governor romney to change voters' minds. early voting is under way in two dozen states. it starts today in iowa and next week in ohio. that has both campaigns stepping

up their advertising in key swing states. >> we should measure compassion by how many people can get off of welfare. >> reporter: romney released a new 60 second ad. he talks about the struggles of average americans. president obama has out spent mitt romney on tv ads and the attacks have resonated with voters like this republican. >> he really doesn't know the common man. >> reporter: the latest poll shows president obama with a ten-point lead over romney in ohio. cbs news has decided to move ohio from undecided to leans obama, a win for the president there would move him 18 electoral votes closer to win. that's 270. >> susan mcginnis in washington. in the nation's capital, vice president joe biden hosted a reception for hispanic leaders last night. he predicted most would see a hispanic president in their lifetime and took a swipe at mitt romney. >> when i hear some of our friends talk about, you know, a nation that is a culture of

dependency, all i have to do is hang out with you guys. i mean it. all they got to do is look around this country and see the vibrancy of what is on the horizon. >> biden added the obama administration was determined to fix the nation's immigration policies. the prime minister of israel and palestinian president addressed the united nations general assembly. mahmoud ahmadinejad wants the u.n. to recognize palestine as an observer state. netanyahu is expected to talk about the threat from iran's nuclear program. and yesterday egyptian's new president spoke. >> reporter: egypt's newly elected president made his first appearance. >> translator: today every egyptian shares a sense of self-confidence. >> reporter: he called for the world to step in to end the

violence in syria. >> translator: we have to put an to end this tragedy. it is the tragedy of the age. >> reporter: iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad challenged the dominance of world powers in his final address at the u.n. the united states and israel have pledged to do what they must to prevent tehran from developing nuclear weapons. >> translator: continued threats by the uncivilized zionist to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this reality. >> reporter: u.s. and israeli leaders chose not to attend president mahmoud ahmadinejad's speech here in the u.n. in part because it occurred on yom kippur. one of the holliest days on the jewish calendar. demonstrators protested mahmoud ahmadinejad's appearance. >> mahmoud ahmadinejad, again does not represent us all. >> reporter: iranian-americans from across the country joined the protest. >> to send a message that the

people of iran stand for democracy, human rights, secular nonnuclear iran. >> reporter: during his speech mahmoud ahmadinejad didn't address his country's nuclear program but did say his nation was committed to peace. here's a look at the weather in some cities around the country. partly sunny in new york. 72 degrees. miami a few thunderstorms, 88. mostly sunny in chicago, 66. partly sunny in dallas, 94. 83 in los angeles. let's check your national forecast. rain expected for much of the northeast and mid-atlantic states. scattered showers and thunderstorms will extend along the ohio valley and central plains. some of those storms can be severe along the ohio river. upper midwest and great lakes area cool and pleasant.

west coast and south will be fair and pleasant as well. in sports this morning less than a week to go in baseball's regular season, in the tightest divisional race in the american league central the chicago white sox and detroit tigers entering wednesday's action. tied for first. chicago hosting cleveland. top of the eighth inning, the indians, first homer of the year to put cleveland up 6-4. that's the final score. detroit can take sole position of first place. tigers trail kansas city 4-1. after a solo shot in the fourth detroit comes back. bottom half of the frame, two00 homer. makes it 4-3. later in the inning, austin jackson tie it up here. that's a solo home run. we go to the eighth inning, looks like detroit, hits it and into an inning ending double play. and the go ahead run comes home. tigers win it 5-4. take over first place. in the national league the cardinals trying to hang on for the second wild card spot.

but the astros complicates those plans. houston breaks a ten game losing streak against the cards with a 2-0 win. former cy young award winner gagne has leveled serious accusations against his teammates. he claims 80% of his teammates on the l.a. dodgers were using performance-enhancing drugs. but he didn't name any names. in 2010 he publicly admitted to using human growth hormones. he said it ruined hit health, tarnished his reputation. when we come back on a thursday, is it the prequel to mona lisa. claims that leonardo davinci created this version of the iconic painting at least a decade before the one that hangs in the louvre. davinci pained this one prior to the one hanging in the louve. whooo! thunderstorms in st. louis, 76 degrees. same deal in denver 71. sunny in seattle, 75 degrees. police are investigating whether missing teamster leader jimmy hoffa may be buried in a detroit suburb. soil samples will be taken from a driveway of a home. a man told police he may have witnessed hoffa's burial. hoffa was last seen alive 37 years ago. the university of california has agreed to pay $1 million to 21 demonstrators who were peppered spray during a protest. that was at uc davis. video of a police officer spraying demonstrators went viral. a peaceful lawful demonstration on this campus was met with hostile police force in major riot gear. >> each demonstrator will

receive $30,000 under the proposed settlement. their attorneys will receive the rest. the campus police officers shown spraying the students was fired. j.k. rowling's first book for adults will be released today. "the casual vacancy" is a story that takes place in a peaceful english village. rowling is the most successful living writer. she said there's a chance she may write another book for young people. i wish i had her imagination. a group in switzerland said it will present proof there's an earlier version of mona lisa. it believes it was done by leonardo davinci at least 11 years before the famous mona lisa that now hangs in the louvre. the clothing and posture is similar. the only thing different is the landscape in the background. some said davinci couldn't have paint the it based on x-rays. fascinating. have to see what happens with that. coming up after your local

members of an indiana national guard unit returned home wednesday after a year long deployment in afghanistan. their mission was to patrol roads and clear away bombs in kandahar province. their homecoming was an emotional event marred by the sad reality some of their colleagues haven't made it back. >> reporter: it's been a year since she's seen her brother. that was sergeant clinton jordan. today was the day he and the 713th engineer company of the indiana national guard returned from war. she had a special delivery for her brother.

his new nephew, 7-month-old braden. >> he's home. and that's all i could ask for. >> reporter: these men spent the last year clearing land mines in afghanistan. >> all the times we talked about this day, it's finally here. >> reporter: six of his friends were not as lucky. they were killed. >> to lose six people like that is extremely catastrophic to me. >> reporter: specialist douglas has been home since january he was in a truck that was detonated by a roadside bomb. it killed four of the guardsmen. >> take me back to that day. >> it's a double edge sword. i want to remember but i don't. >> reporter: for nearly a month he lay in a coma at walter reed hospital with a broken pelvis, fractured spine, crushed ankle and punctured lung. >> i thank god every day i'm here. i was able to see my son's birth, and i was able to be back here in the states for that and

around my kids but at the same time i would gladly give my life to bring all four of them back. >> reporter: he was eager to thank the men who saved his life. one of them was sergeant jordan who saw the explosion from the rear of the convoy. >> not knowing, scared, it was scary. >> reporter: jordan is his brother in arms but brother-in-law. the last time these men saw each other, he was being loaded on to a medical helicopter. >> i missed you. >> reporter: amanda also wanted to thank her big brother clinton. >> my brother told me he was out there and held him. words can't express how thankful i am for my brother. >> my family coming home. >> reporter: finally back home again in indiana. michelle miller, cbs news, gary, indiana. >> coming up after your local news on cbs "this morning," details of a deal between the nfl and referees union. we'll get an analysis from james brown. mitt romney speaks to jan crawford about why he thinks
